Franklin University Expands Affordability and Transparency Through New Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) Planning Tool

Continuing its student-focused mission to provide a high-quality, relevant education enabling the broadest community of learners to achieve their goals and enrich the world, Franklin University is proud to announce the expansion of its MyTransfer Credit tool to now include Credit for Prior Learning (CPL). Prospective students can now check the transferability of college courses and professional certificates, and training in real-time and compare degree programs to help find the best fit to maximize their time and financial resources.

Differentiating itself from other institutions that provide prior learning credit, Franklin University’s MyTransfer Credit tool and the addition of MyCertificates + Training provides a pre-application view of how to maximize career experience and educational investment for credits not found on a college transcript. To date, Franklin has pre-evaluated more than 500 work and life experiences for industry-recognized proficiencies, which equate to awarded credit for professional training, certificates, credentials, and licenses. Through this assessment, the University honors the learning that takes place outside of the classroom, recognizing that there are multiple pathways adult students take to completing a degree. Today, students have many sources for learning, from the military to massive open online courses (MOOCs), challenging all types of institutions to devise reliable and manageable methods for verifying college-level learning and mastery.

The My Certificate + Professional Training assessment follows the American Council on Education (ACE) and National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS) and adheres to the Ohio Department of Higher Education Career-Technical Credit Transfer guarantees. The University evaluates experiences from accredited institutions and organizations that are recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Examples of approved credit include professional training (Police, Corrections, Fire, Paramedic), industry certifications (CompTIA, PMI, ISSA, CREST), certificates (Google, MedCerts, Welding, and Automotive), and credentials and licenses (SHRM, Series 66, CCNA, AHIMA).

Using this new tool, students can save time and money toward completing a degree. As institutions of higher learning continue to demonstrate long-term value to learners, industries, and the communities they serve, making the learning process seamless, stackable, affordable, and accessible is imperative. Since 2017, Franklin students have saved more than $6 million by using prior learning credit to satisfy degree requirements.
