Franklin University Introduces MSN-Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program

Franklin University, one of the leading educators of working adults, is pleased to announce its new MSN-Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program. Today’s announcement adds to the growing list of online nursing programs that include the RN to BSN, MSN, and DNP, among other academic offerings.

As the global pandemic impacted many aspects of life, it left many in its wake anxious and uncertain. While instances of anxiety, depression and substance abuse issues continue to rise, the increase has sparked important dialog about mental health, as well as efforts to remove the stigma that has long-surrounded a mental diagnosis and the search for treatment. With Franklin’s new MSN-PMHNP program, students are able to explore their passion for psychiatric nursing while learning techniques to bridge these mental health gaps.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health Disorders, one in four adults suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder. Unfortunately, close to half of individuals with mental illnesses do not receive treatment. Franklin’s M.S. in Nursing-Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (MSN-PMHNP) degree equips students with the knowledge and skills to make much-needed behavioral and mental healthcare more accessible to individuals of any age. Franklin’s program is designed to prepare advanced practicing nurses with a holistic approach to diagnose acute, episodic and chronic mental health illnesses and provide a treatment options that include medication, psychotherapy or a combination of the two.

Throughout the progression of the program, students will be exposed to current and emerging technologies like Shadow Health, iHuman, and EXXAT clinical management software. These tools help students merge coursework with existing knowledge to develop a theoretical basis to guide one’s practice to promote high quality, effective, patient-centered care. As Franklin builds its students learning techniques, they will also have the opportunity to focus on treatment modalities for individual, group and family psychotherapy including observation, interviewing skills, mental health assessments and screening mechanisms. In addition to the coursework, Franklin weaves clinical practice hours within its program – providing students with the opportunity to acquire 600 hours of clinical practice experience.

Competition of Franklin’s MSN program equips students with skills aligned with industry standards. As a result, completion of the degree qualifies those to apply to sit for the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification examination offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
